What is an acceptable moisture reading in a hardwood floor?

Moisture content is a crucial factor in the health and longevity of hardwood floors. Maintaining the correct moisture level is essential to prevent damage, such as cupping, buckling, or gapping.

The acceptable moisture reading for hardwood flooring depends on the species of wood used and the environment in which the floor is installed. Generally, moisture content should be between 6% and 9%. Below this range, the wood may become too dry and brittle, while above this range, it can swell and cause buckling.

Moisture readings can be taken using a moisture meter. If you are concerned about the moisture level in your hardwood floor, it is recommended to consult a professional flooring contractor for an accurate reading and recommendations for any necessary adjustments.
